SYNOPSIS

Boss Cat is the story of 23-year-old Sonja, a woman with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) who, after the death of her mother, finds herself fighting to stay in the only home she’s ever known. When her estranged grandmother threatens to sell the family house and place her in care, Sonja takes a bold stand. But to win the support she needs, she must first find a way to transform her explosive temper into something powerful and positive—Krump dance.

Heartfelt, funny, and visually striking, Boss Cat is a film about belonging, self-determination, and the wild, beautiful mess of growing up—no matter your age or ability.

Boss Cat marks the debut feature of writer and director Genevieve Clay-Smith, a trailblazing filmmaker known for visionary works that champion diversity and inclusion. Her award-winning short The Interviewer (Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, 2013), Groundhog Night (Sydney Film Festival, 2020), and I Am Emmanuel (Palm Springs International, 2014) have earned international acclaim.

Genevieve is also the Series Writer and Director of the 26 x 11-minute series Fizzy and Suds (2024), which has drawn global attention with three nominations at the 2024 Prix Jeunesse—including the prestigious UNESCO Prize, awarded to a children’s or youth program that promotes better understanding of people, cultures, and experiences.
